In-Situ Calibrated Modeling of Residual Stresses Induced in Machining under Various Cooling and Lubricating Environments

چکیده
Although many functional characteristics, such as fatigue life and damage resistance depend on residual stresses, there are currently no industrially viable ‘Digital Process Twin’ models (DPTs) capable of efficiently quickly predicting machining-induced stresses. By leveraging advances in ultra-high-speed in-situ experimental characterization machining finishing processes under plane strain (orthogonal/2D) conditions, we have developed a set physics-based semi-analytical to predict stress evolution light the extreme gradients stress, temperature, which unique these thermo-mechanical processes. Initial validation trials this novel paradigm were carried out Ti-6Al4V AISI 4340 alloy steel. A variety dry, cryogenically cooled oil lubricated conditions evaluated determine model’s ability capture tribological changes induced due lubrication cooling. The preliminarily calibrated validated model exhibited an average correlation better than 20% between predicted stresses data, with calculation times less second. Based fast-acting DPTs, authors envision future capabilities pro-active surface engineering advanced structural components (e.g., turbine blades).

متن کاملIn situ and induced stresses
Rock at depth is subjected to stresses resulting from the weight of the overlying strata and from locked in stresses of tectonic origin. When an opening is excavated in this rock, the stress field is locally disrupted and a new set of stresses are induced in the rock surrounding the opening. Knowledge of the magnitudes and directions of these in situ and induced stresses is an essential compone...

R stresses have a major impact on the ability to fabricate dimensionally accurate machined components from aluminum wrought mill products. In addition, the ability to implement advanced assembly technologies such as determinant assembly, where parts are indexed to each other rather than to expensive assembly tooling, is compromised when the parts are not dimensionally accurate. An active resear...
متن کاملSurface Finish and Residual Stresses Induced by Orthogonal Dry Machining of AA7075-T651
The surface finish was extensively studied in usual machining processes (turning, milling, and drilling). For these processes, the surface finish is strongly influenced by the cutting feed and the tool nose radius. However, a basic understanding of tool/surface finish interaction and residual stress generation has been lacking. This paper aims to investigate the surface finish and residual stre...
